The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia held a diplomatic reception in Budapest this Thursday to celebrate Slovenia’s Statehood Day and the 31st anniversary of the country's independence.
Hundreds of people, including members of the diplomatic community in Budapest and others, gathered in the Museum of Military History in the Buda Castle in Budapest at the invitation of the Slovenian Ambassador to Hungary, Dr. Marjan Cencen and his wife, Lilijana Pogorevčnik Cencen.
Statehood Day is Slovenia's national day and commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991. Following the plebiscite held in December 1990, the then Slovenian Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Independence of Slovenia and the Basic Constitutional Charter on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia.
The formal declaration of independence was on the next day, June 26, but since much of the legislation relating to independence was passed on June 25, it is this date that is remembered and celebrated on Statehood Day.
