Hungarian Consumer Prices Up 4.2% Year-On-Year

Consumer prices in Hungary were 4.2% higher on average in April 2025 than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office reported this Wednesday.

Compared to March, consumer prices went up by 0.2% on average.

In 12 months, compared to April 2024:
A price increase of 5.4% was recorded for food, within which 26.9% for eggs, 23.7% for flour, 23.4% for edible oil, 20.0% for chocolate and cocoa, 19.8% for coffee, 14.5% for fruit and vegetable juices, 9.8% for buffet products, 8.2% for non-alcoholic beverages, 7.5% for milk and 6.8% for bread. Within the product group, the price of margarine lessened by 29.2%, that of milk products by 7.5% and other meat preparation prices by 6.4%. Services became 7.0%, within which postal services 11.3% more expensive, rents were up by 11.0% and the repair and maintenance of vehicles became 10.5%, personal care services 10.1%, the repair and maintenance of dwellings 9.8% and recreational services 8.4% more expensive. Alcoholic beverage and tobacco prices rose by 6.3%, within which the price of tobacco by 7.0%. An average 3.5% more was to be paid for electricity, gas and other fuels, within which the price of butane and propane gas increased by 8.7% and that of natural and manufactured gas by 7.2%. Consumer durable prices were up by 2.0%, within which jewellery cost 22.0%, new passenger cars 6.1% and living and dining room furniture 3.7% more and second-hand passenger cars 1.9% less for consumers. Motor fuel prices diminished by 7.1% and pharmaceutical products became 4.9% more expensive.

In one month, compared to March 2025:
Consumer prices increased by 0.2% on average. Food prices lessened by 1.3%. Within this, margarine cost 23.6%, milk products 13.4%, flour 12.5%, butter 8.7%, milk 8.6%, edible oil 6.1%, other meat preparations 5.9%, cheese 5.4%, poultry meat 5.0%, sugar 4.3% and pork 4.1% less for consumers. Within the product group, the price of chocolate and cocoa became 3.3%, buffet products 1.9%, non-alcoholic beverages and rice both 1.4%, pasta products 1.3%, rolls 0.9% and bread 0.7% more expensive. The highest price rise of 3.8% was measured for electricity, gas and other fuels, within which 8.3% more was to be paid for natural and manufactured gas and 1.2% less for butane and propane gas (Press release). Clothing and footwear prices rose by 2.1% and alcoholic beverage and tobacco prices by 1.3% on average, within which latter the price of tobacco by 2.4%. Services became 0.8% more expensive, within which recreation in the country cost 4.7%, recreation abroad 1.4% and the repair and maintenance of vehicles 1.0% more for consumers. Motor fuel prices diminished by 1.4% and pharmaceutical products became 3.1% more expensive.
