The Hungarian Stock Market Has Had a Tough Week

The Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE) share index, the BUX, closed the week at 150,666.43 points, up 1.35% from last Wednesday’s close – a gain of 2,006.62 points.

Weekly trading volume totaled HUF 107.9 billion, nearly double the previous week’s HUF 58.9 billion, when trading on the Budapest Stock Exchange took place over only three days due to a holiday. With the exception of Magyar Telekom, leading stocks rose. In its weekly summary, Equilor Investment Ltd. highlighted that Roemer Capital lowered its 12-month target price for OTP from HUF 56,000 to HUF 54,000, while Citi raised its 12-month target price from HUF 41,330 to HUF 52,700, with both firms maintaining a “buy” recommendation.

On Tuesday, as expected, the Monetary Council of the National Bank of Hungar cut the base rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. Policymakers will decide on whether to continue monetary easing based on the September inflation report. On Monday, the BUX rose 1.82% to 151,360.28 points, reaching an all-time high. The positive sentiment continued on Tuesday, when the index climbed another 0.12%, reaching its highest-ever closing price of 151,539.19 points.

On the remaining two days of the week, the BSE stock index fell as investors took profits. On Wednesday, the BUX fell by 784.17 points, or 0.52%, closing at 150,755.02 points, and on Thursday, the index dropped by 1,108.5 points, or 0.74%, to 149,646.52 points. On the last day of the week, sentiment turned positive again, and the BUX closed at 150,666.43 points on Friday, up 1,019.91 points, or 0.68%.

Among the leading stocks, Richter posted the strongest gain for the week; its share price rose 3.80% compared to last week’s close, reaching HUF 13,370, with total trading volume of HUF 19.0 billion.

OTP ended the week up 1.6% at HUF 46,000, with trading volume approaching HUF 57.3 billion.

Mol rose 0.70% to close at HUF 5,050 on Friday, with weekly trading volume of HUF 21.7 billion.

Magyar Telekom fell 1.49% to HUF 2,504, with weekly trading volume exceeding HUF 6.4 billion. The BUMIX index, which tracks small- and mid-cap stocks, fell 1.0% to close the week at 9,567.72 points.
