The amount of electricity generated by solar panels in Hungary increased by 25.2% this June compared to the same period last year, the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) said on Thursday, based on its latest energy statistics report.
They added that solar energy accounted for three quarters of the electricity generated from renewable energy sources and 22% of the total gross electricity generated.
According to the statement, national primary energy production in June was 32.14 petajoules (PJ), down 1.39 petajoules from the same period last year. Production from primary renewables increased by 0.37 petajoules, while production from nuclear sources decreased by 1.15 petajoules, primary fossil fuels by 0.44 petajoules and other non-renewable sources by 0.18 petajoules compared to June last year.
National primary energy consumption in June was 71.22 petajoules, down 3.24 petajoules year-on-year. Within consumption, renewables rose by 0.25 petajoule and net imports of electricity by 0.09 petajoule. The consumption of all fossil fuels decreased compared to the previous year, with a combined decrease of 2.42 petajoules compared to the same month of the previous year.
Domestic consumption of natural gas was 13.30 petajoules, 10% lower than a year earlier.
Total domestic electricity use in June this year was 3,905 gigawatt hours (GWh), down 2.1% from the same period last year.
Gross electricity generation was 3,025 gigawatt-hours, 3.5% lower than in June 2021. Gross electricity generation from nuclear sources decreased 7.4%, fossil-based generation decreased 11.3%, and other sources decreased 20.5% year-over-year.
Gross electricity generated from renewable sources increased by 13.1% year-on-year. Three quarters of electricity generated from renewable energy sources came from solar energy, 15.5% from biomass and 4.4% from wind energy.
