A new gas power plant is being built in Mátra as the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) has granted the installation permit for the planned combined cycle gas power plant unit in Visonta, the Ministry of Energy (EM) said in a post on its community page on Thursday.
Once the last administrative condition is met, construction can begin and work will start soon. It has been a decade and a half since the last basic power plant was built in Hungary, and in order to strengthen security of supply and energy sovereignty, three new units are being built in Eastern Hungary, one of which will be located at the Visonta site of the Mátra power plant, which will not only ensure uninterrupted electricity supply but also safeguard jobs in the region, the ministry said.
The MVM Group's brownfield project will allow the international consortium to rely on excellent local conditions and existing utility connections. It is expected that 650 megawatts of flexible capacity will be installed by 2028, facilitating the balanced integration of new green energy producers, the statement said.
