The international energy company Shell has opened the region’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling station in Hungary.
According to a statement by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, transport accounts for around 20% of greenhouse gas emissions, of which 70% is from road transport, with trucks responsible for two-thirds. There are two ways to reduce this share: one is to shift transport to rail, the other is to use lower-emission fuels and the use of liquefied natural gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 15-30% compared to normal fuels.
Shell is the oldest foreign player in the Hungarian fuel market and the first Western company with which Hungary has signed a long-term gas purchase agreement to supply 250 million cubic meters per year via the Croatian LNG port.
Shell also highlights in a statement that carbon neutralization is one of the biggest challenges for the transport sector and a key objective of the company's strategy. One possible solution is the use of LNG, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels. "The new station in Hungary is an important member of Shell's European LNG network, which supports the uptake of LNG as a truck fuel in Hungary and in countries with significant freight volumes such as Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia," according to the statement.
The company is continuously expanding its European network of LNG refueling stations to support the carbon reduction efforts of its road freight partners. For trucks, the use of LNG can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to today's conventional diesel, while the use of bio-LNG can reduce emissions to zero, the company says.
The modernized station at Szigetszentmiklós, just south of Budapest will supply LNG and, in the future, bio-LNG fuel to trucks in Hungary, while also supporting freight traffic to other countries.
