Veolia Invest Hungary and Uniper Group signed a sale and purchase agreement for the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Uniper Hungary Energetikai Ltd.
The purchase of the company, which owns and operates the Gönyű power plant, Hungary's most modern and one of the largest combined cycle gas turbine power plants, fits well into the Veolia Group's long-term strategy of increasing the efficiency of electricity supply in Hungary and the increasing use of renewable resources.
On February 14, 2024, Veolia Invest Hungary Plc, a Hungarian member of the international Veolia Group, signed a sale and purchase agreement with the German-based Uniper Group to acquire 100% of the shares of Uniper Hungary Energetikai Ltd., which owns and operates the Gönyű power plant.
The Gönyű power plant in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, which was commissioned in 2011 and underwent efficiency and capacity upgrades in 2017 and 2021, is Hungary's most modern and one of the largest combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants. With an installed electricity capacity of 428 MW, the plant operates at peak efficiency and provides almost 8% of Hungary's electricity generation, supplying electricity to around 600,000 consumers. The power plant is a key element of the country's critical infrastructure, as it is capable of providing a black start service in the event of a blackout of the entire national electricity grid.
The power plant represents the best and most advanced technology available on a sustained basis and is the largest player in the market for system-level balancing regulatory ancillary services. Its flexible regulation capability allows it to provide system-level balancing control, which is essential in an increasingly dynamic but uncertain, weather-dependent renewable generation.
The power plant fits well into Veolia's long-term strategy and energy portfolio in Hungary, where the company now operates ten gas and renewable power plants.
