E.ON Sites Greener Through Environmental Initiatives

The E.ON Hungária Group is upgrading its sites with environmental goals in mind, continuing the biodiversity action plan launched in 2023. The company, which operates the power grid in Transdanubia, Pest County, and Budapest, is increasing biodiversity at its 90 company-owned sites – including facilities, power plants, solar parks, and substations – to create a more livable environment for local wildlife, the company says in a statement.

As part of the initiative, bird-, reptile-, mammal-, and pollinator-friendly projects are being implemented at E.ON’s sites. Recently, falcon nesting boxes, swallow nests, bat roosts, and songbird nesting boxes and sparrow roosts made by company volunteers have been installed in locations including Győr, Szombathely, Aszófő, Pécs, at substations in Budapest, at the Nyíregyháza gas-fired power plant, and at certain solar power parks. At numerous sites, bee pastures covering hundreds of square meters were established through flower seeding to restore the areas’ natural meadow character, while afforestation and shrub planting also help increase green spaces. The expansion of natural habitats is supported by placed stone and wood piles, providing shelter for insects and lizards.

Environmental initiatives will continue at new locations this year. The company also employs innovative solutions in sustainable land management: at the Toponár solar farm near Kaposvár, traditional mowing and chemical weed control have been replaced by sheep grazing for the past two years. The technical background for the project was provided by a collaboration with the Kaposvár Campus of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The sheep will soon take over the Toponár area again, and this year they will also appear in additional solar parks, in Szigetvár and the Tatabánya industrial park.

Every intervention is preceded by a thorough ecological assessment, conducted in collaboration with professional partners, experts from the National Parks located on E.ON’s land, the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME), and other supporting organizations and universities, the statement points out.
