On Earth Hour, on the last Saturday evening of March each year, unessential lights are switched off for an hour and electrical appliances are turned off around the world. Budapest has also joined the intiative.
The 60 minutes dedicated to the Earth is not only to symbolically turn off the lights in homes and cities, but also to raise awareness that all have a responsibility to create a sustainable future and protect the planet.
The Earth Hour campaign was initiated by WWF Australia in 2006. Sydney turned off its lights for an hour to raise awareness of climate change, and in 2007, consumption fell by 10.2% in one hour in that city alone.
Since 2007, decorative lights have been switched off for an hour every March in most of the world's major cities. In just a few years, Earth Hour has grown from a local action in Australia to a global volunteer movement mobilizing billions of people, hundreds of countries and celebrities to support WWF's climate protection efforts.
