Hungary’s standing timber volume increased by nearly 4 million cubic meters in 2025: According to information from the Forest Management Department of the Ministry for the Living Environment, the stock rose from 419,055,552 cubic meters to 423,012,239 cubic meters, as reported in the summary published on the fataj.hu website.
Based on last year’s data, the total area of forest stands increased from 1,960,936 hectares to 1,962,043 hectares, with the area of native tree species increasing from 1,115,020 hectares to 1,117,574 hectares. The volume of timber harvested reached 6,946,532 cubic meters in 2024 and 7,546,205 cubic meters in 2025, the report stated.
Based on their designated use, 1,151,964 hectares of domestic forests were used for commercial purposes, 14,464 hectares for public welfare, and 795,614 hectares for various conservation purposes. The area of protected forest stands is 428,563 hectares, while the area of Natura 2000 forest stands is 773,672 hectares.
In terms of distribution by tree species, black locust leads with 463,235 hectares, followed by oak as the second most widespread species with 395,560 hectares, and then hornbeam with 219,988 hectares. Black locust, pine, and European poplar were the leading species in timber harvesting last year.
