According to bank card usage data, Hungarian consumers gave tips of 8.12% at domestic restaurants this year, Teya Hungary told MTI on Tuesday, based on data from POS terminals it operates at 2,000 restaurants.
The service provider, which operates card acceptance terminals for a total of around 20,000 businesses in Hungary, reported that looking at the whole year up to the Christmas period, guests gave the highest tips, exceeding 11%, in July, while during the rest of the year, this figure averaged between 6% and 10%.
During the year, consumers typically leave the lowest tips at the end of the year, in October-December, and at the beginning of the year, in January-February, while the highest tips are left in the summer months, June-August.
According to Teya Hungary, the level of tipping in Hungary is in line with that of the Central and Eastern European region, but significantly lower than the industry average of 15-20% measured in the United States.
