The Hungarian air traffic service HungaroControl is updating its air navigation and voice communication systems, and is also renovating the control room equipment handed over in 2012.
As the first step of the project, air traffic control was moved to the emergency center from Monday to Tuesday night, and the specialists are expected to perform their duties from here by April.
Gábor Bajkó, the head of the technical operation and development department of the specialist service, said on Tuesday during the walk-through after the changeover that the transformation is expected to take half a year. As part of this process, 55 workstations will be rebuilt to enable stationary work. Also, voice communication systems and 500 kilometers of cabling will be replaced along with upgrading the MATIAS air traffic control software.
These systems have been in use 24 hours a day for the past eight years and now need to be updated for EU regulations and cyber security reasons. HungaroControl has timed the renovation for the winter scheduling period when staff handle less traffic from the smaller capacity emergency center.
