COVID-19: Indian Variant Identified in Hungary

The Covid-19 variant first identified in India has been detected in Hungary, chief medical officer Cecília Müller has announced.

Of the two patients identified with the variant, one has already recovered and the other is treated in a hospital, but does not need a ventilator, she said.

Cecília Müller said that one of the two patients had recovered from the infection and had an easy course of the disease, while the other patient was in hospital but did not require ventilation. She added that neither of them had been abroad and the epidemiological investigation had not revealed the source of the infection.

The Indian mutant will eventually emerge in more and more countries, she said, adding that it was important for everyone to protect themselves against infection.

As regards news from the past 24 hours, 465 new cases of coronavirus infection have been registered, bringing the total number of identified infections to 804,032 since the start of the outbreak.

27 patients have died, bringing the total number of deaths to 29 709. The number of recovered cases is now 692,248 and the number of active infected persons has decreased to 82,075. 1024 patients with coronavirus are hospitalized, 114 of them are on ventilators.
