Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony has announced that the city is investing nearly HUF 4 billion in energy efficiency with support from the European Union.
The mayor says the available resources will be used to completely renovate heat exchanges, install new pipeline sections, connect new consumers to district heating, upgrade district heating pipeline sections, replace hot water boilers to increase energy efficiency and connect heat exchanges to a remote monitoring system. “All these works will be carried out, resulting in real reductions in bills,” he points out.
He adds that the investments, partly financed with EU funds, will reduce electricity demand by a total of 280,591 kWh per year and will also reduce the demand for natural gas for the boilers in the Rózsakert area by 2,363 GJ.
But it does not end there. The annual reduction in greenhouse gases is 8,129 tons, equivalent to the carbon dioxide sequestration of about 570 hectares of forest. And the overall reduction in primary energy use through energy efficiency improvements is expected to be 121,420 GJ/year, equivalent to the annual gas consumption of around 3,500 households.
“As I promised, despite the raging inflation, energy, economic and livelihood crisis, we are doing our utmost to make Budapest an environmentally friendly and sustainable city. For ourselves, for our future, for our children, for our city,” he concludes.
