The European Commission has suspended the payment of funding in three priorities of Hungarian development programmes totalling about EUR 2.3 billion. Hungarian officials say a correction of up to 10% can be expected, adding that this amount will not necessarily be lost.
Deputy State Secretary Nándor Csepreghy said the EC is suspending funding for the first three priority areas of Hungary’s economic development operative program that cover innovation projects, economic development and commercial infrastructure development.
The suspension came after the European authorities - after an audit in May last year - revealed systemic weaknesses in the project selection system. All the objections concern projects whose tender was announced after the current government of Viktor Orbán took over in Hungary in 2010.
