The flag was hoisted to the sounds of the Anthem by the Hungarian Army's ceremonial unit in the presence of the speaker of the national assembly, the minister of defense and the commander of the Hungarian armed forces Friday morning in Kossuth Lajos Square in front of the Parliament building.
Due to the coronavirus epidemic, most of the central events organized in memory of the 1956 uprising against the Stalinist rule were canceled this year.
On the anniversary of the uprising, people across the country are paying their respects in some form, but due to the epidemic situation, local governments usually hold only minor commemorations this year.
In Hungary, an uprising began on October 23, 1956, beginning with a peaceful demonstration and continuing with an armed resistance against the communist dictatorship associated with the name of Mátyás Rákosi and the Soviet occupation. Since May 1990, the start of the uprising has been Hungary's national holiday.
