Former Minister of Defense, György Keleti, died at the age of 74 after a long-term illness. The news confirmed his widow, to the state news agency MTI Sunday afternoon.
György Keleti was born on May 18, 1946 in Losonc, Czechoslovakia. He studied at the Máté Zalka Military Technical College and then at the Miklós Zrínyi Military Academy.
He started his career in 1969 with the Vác Newsreel Regiment as a squadron commander. He joined the Ministry of Defense (HM) in 1977. From 1989 to 1992, he was a spokesman for HM. He retired in 1992 as a colonel.
From 1994 to 1998, he served as Minister of Defense in the Horn government. From 1969 to 1989, he was a member of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (MSZMP), and from 1992, he was a member of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP). Between 1992 and 2010, he served as Member of Parliament for the MSZP. He was the chairman and vice-chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Parliament for several parliamentary cycles.
