Heat records broken in Hungary again

This Wednesday, the national daily maximum temperature record was broken, as was the Budapest record - the National Meteorological Service told the Hungarian news agency MTI. Thursday may see the absolute national record superseeded.

As a result of almost uninterrupted sunshine, air temperature rose quickly. At the Baja Csávoly station in southern Hungary, 39 degrees Celsius was measured, a notch higher than the value of the previous national record of 38 degrees measured in 1931 in Túrkeve.

The heat record was broken in the capital, too. Until now, the Budapest record on  August 7 was 35.7 degrees in 1952. This Wednesday, it was hotter than that at several points in the city: 37.2 in downtown Budapest or 37.9 degrees in the northern district Újpest.

The Weather Service says one has to wait for relief until Friday evening.
