Holocaust Victims Remembered in Budapest

The victims of the Holocaust were remembered this Monday at the ‘Shoes on the Danube’ Holocaust Memorial in Budapest with the participation of Yakov Hadas-Handelsman, Israel's new Ambassador to Hungary.

In the first public appearance for the Israeli diplomat in this country, he expressed his respect for the victims of the Holocaust in Hungary, alongside the representatives of Hungarian Jewish denominations and invited guests.

On behalf of the Hungarian Jewish Community Association (Mazsihisz), it was Zoltán Radnóti, Chief Rabbi of the Beta Salal Synagogue in South Buda, who prayed for the victims, followed by Slomó Köves, leader of the United Jewish Community of Hungary (EMIH).

Before the prayer, Slomó Köves told the participants that people say this more than two thousand years old the prayer for the dead because that is how they are trying to make up for their lack. "The most important parts of human life are the good deeds that can be done in this world, and those who died prematurely can no longer do any good deeds," he said.

After the candle was lit, participants held a minute of silence dedicated to the victims. The event was attended – among others – by the Ambassadors to Hungary of Germany, Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands.
