Given the outstanding performance of Hungarian athletes at this year’s Summer Olympic Games in London, it has come as no surprise that the Hungarian athletes of the year in 2012 are all Olympic champions.
Based on votes by Hungarian sportswriters, the top athlete in Hungary among the men was swimmer Dániel Gyurta, this year’s Olympic champion with world record in the 200-meter breaststroke event. He finished ahead of two other Olympic champions, gymnast Krisztián Berki of the pommel horse event and Áron Szilágyi, the individual winner in saber fencing.
Among the women, swimmer Éva Risztov, the winner of the 10-kilometer Olympic race received the most votes, ahead of Danuta Kozák who won two gold medals in the 500-meter kayaking races (individual and kayak-four) and Olympic bronze medalist judoka, Éva Csernoviczki.
