Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orbán represented Hungary at the official ceremonies in Paris to mark France’s national holiday, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
Among the 35 countries that participated in this year's military parade, Hungary was also represented by over 15 soldiers of the Hungarian Armed Forces, the statement said.
The ministry noted that the July 14 national holiday commemorates the 1789 storming of the Bastille, a defining event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The holiday symbolizes a commitment to freedom, civil rights and democratic values, it added.
"Freedom is also of paramount importance in Hungarian history. The revolution and war of independence of 1848-49, as well as the 1956 revolution, remind us that freedom is a value that every generation must preserve and give meaning to," the ministry said.
