High energy prices are further complicating the situation for Hungarian farmers: this year's weather means that the season will bring less income due to a smaller than average harvest, but this can be offset by higher storage costs, Vg.hu reports.
Ferenc Ledó, head of the vegetable production sub-department of the National Chamber of Agriculture, told the portal that many farmers are now considering selling their produce after harvesting, instead of storing it. They fear that they will not be able to pass on the increased storage costs in their prices. This is mainly the case with root vegetables, onions and potatoes, which have not had a very good harvest this year anyway, vg.hu points out.
The portal's article reveals that simple containers can store vegetables until Christmas without loss of quality, after which special containers are needed. Due to the low harvests across Europe, there will be no oversupply even if producers sell the entire stock this year, so consumers should not expect a price drop, not only because the price of transport has also increased.
