This Saturday, I Bike Budapest held a bicycle march in Budapest to stand up for the newly renovated, congestion-free, passable Chain Bridge. According to the organizers and police, around 15,000 cyclists took part in the event, which was held in sunny weather of 20 degrees Celsius.
The parade started from Heroes' Square, where the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Hungary, Désirée Bonis launched the procession. The participants cycled along Andrássy Avenue and across the newly restored Chain Bridge to Buda, along the lower Buda embankment of the Danube River and back to Pest, before ending up on Margaret Island with a traditional bike lift and a musical picnic.
According to the organizers, it used to be almost impossible to get across the Chain Bridge because of the constant traffic jams, but now it is becoming an attractive route for those who prefer sustainable transport.
As chief organizer Samu Fazekas stressed, "the interoperable Chain Bridge is in everyone's interest, where buses are not held up by constant traffic jams and bicycles can finally be ridden safely and quickly.”
