On June 10, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) invited everyone to a picnic and a demonstration of local hop production in Kastélyosdombó, in the castle park of the Erdődy Castle, which is also the seat of the regional headquarters of the Hungarian Interchurch Aid.
The event, called ‘Hops Tour in Kastélyosdombó’, was supported by HEINEKEN Hungária and attracted cycling groups from Barcs, Szigetvár and Sellye, as well as families from the surrounding villages, who could participate in a variety of activities during the day. There were hops handicrafts, quizzes and skill games, quizzes and an adventure park. This year, the picnic was rounded off with a gastronomic experience: the visitors were given a glimpse into the secrets of the Erdődy brewery, they could take part in a tasting at the Kastélyosdombó cheese workshop and were treated to a freshly prepared meal from local ingredients, according to a HIA statement.
The participants of today’s events were able to taste the Sopron 1895 premium lager beer made with local hops, and, guided by the estate owner, to learn about local hop production and how hops are transported from the plantation to the pint. The event also revealed how the center of Kastélyosdombó is being renovated to world-class standards.
Eszter Varga-Nagy, Head of Corporate Relations and Communications at HEINEKEN Hungária, said at the event, "for the fifth year now, we have been part of the value creation in Kastélyosdombó, where we show through hop production how the Hungarian agriculture and local communities can be developed in many ways. Not only do we want to keep a forgotten skill alive, we also want to pay homage to tradition while providing long-term opportunities for communities in the region. We are proud to work with the HIA and the Ministry of Agriculture to support local values."
László Lehel, President and CEO of the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, stressed that "an integral part of this program is now the hop plantation, where, with the support of Heineken, we are reviving an agricultural culture that disappeared for decades, while providing employment and contributing to the local opportunity program with the proceeds. Today's charity event, called the Hops Tour, will give people from the region an insight into this opportunity program, and we hope many of the cyclists will not only be our ambassadors but regular guests."
Hop growing has a long tradition in Hungary, which has declined in recent decades. HEINEKEN Hungária and the Hungarian Interchurch Aid have been working together for five years to revive this tradition, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, and to create jobs for disadvantaged families involved in the production of hops.
