Klaudia Pataki, the mayor of Kecskemét, southeast of Budapest, presented Markus Schäfer, a member of the board of Mercedes-Benz AG, with the Key to the City award at a ceremony in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Budapest on Tuesday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó called Markus Schäfer "a real friend of Hungary" whose decisions had helped the Hungarian economy and the Hungarian people to profit much.

He noted that the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét was now the company's biggest base in Europe and the second-biggest in the world after one in China.

The Hungarian plant, which makes combustion engine, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models, has produced 2 million cars in 13 years, he said in a statement issued by his ministry. The plant employs over 5,000 people, he added.
