Dozens of migrants (they could number as many 50) were found dead in a truck with temporary Hungarian license plate parked along the A4 motorway in Austria, some 30 kilometers from the Hungarian border on Thursday. Hungarian authorities will help the investigation.
Austrian police
discovered the 7.5-ton truck that may have been parked near the town of
Parndorf since Wednesday. It turned out that a Romanian citizen had registered
the number plate of the truck (that has Slovak language advertisements on it) in the eastern
Hungarian town of Kecskemét. The driver has disappeared and is wanted by police
A forensic
investigation begans after the storage area is cooled down to a certain temperature but a police official estimated the
number of victims, the bodies some of whom had begun to decompose, is close to 50. They are likely to have died in Hungary.
The Hungarian
government expressed its condolences to the relatives of the victims and the
National Investigation Bureau of the Hungarian police force offered its
cooperation to the Austrian authorities.
