Tourism in Hungary is booming, and ‘Ferihegy’ [as Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport is commonly known] is Europe's fastest growing airport, Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy said at the Michelin Guide awards ceremony in Budapest on Tuesday evening, where he also thanked Hungarian gastronomy for its achievements.
This year has been a record year in Hungary, with 15.5 million guests staying 38.5 million nights in Hungarian hotels and restaurants in October, up 5.3% on last year, and a 10% increase in the number of guests providing a living for hospitality workers. So, there is a boom in Hungarian tourism, he said.
He predicted that Ferenc Liszt Airport's passenger traffic will be close to 18 million in 2024, the fastest growth in the sector in Europe and he was of the view that the state had got a good deal by buying back the airport.
He added that the airport is expected to grow to handling 20 million passengers a year by 2030, and next year the foundation stone for Terminal 3 will be laid, providing quality conditions for the growing number of travelers.
He stressed that tourism now accounts for nearly 12% of Hungary's GDP and 10% of the central budget. The government has also been trying to help the sector, with the publication on Monday of a decree on tax exemptions for tipping and the capping of service charges.
Olivér Csendes, CEO of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, said the Michelin Guide is a globally recognized restaurant guide that can bring the best restaurants to the top and help young talent to succeed in their careers.
The first Hungarian restaurant was awarded a Michelin star was in 2010, and last year, the number of restaurants awarded this accolade, two of them with two stars, increased to nine, he said, adding that this achievement makes Hungarian gastronomy stand out at regional level.
