The national flag was hoisted with military honors this Thursday, the national holiday marking the 69th anniversary of the anti-communist uprising and freedom fight of 1956, in the presence of Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky and Colonel General Gábor Böröndi, the commander of the Armed Forces.
Representatives of state and military organizations also attended the event.
In Hungary, a revolution began in October 1956 with a peaceful demonstration and continued with an armed uprising against the communist dictatorship associated with the name of Mátyás Rákosi and the Soviet occupation.
The anniversary of the uprising and revolution against Soviet occupation and communist dictatorship was declared a national holiday by Parliament in 1991.
On the national holiday, the major political parties held rallies. PM Viktor Orbán spoke to the supporters of the governing party gathered in front of the Parliament building while the head of the major opposition Tisza Party speaking to a crowd on Heroes' Square.
