The deaths of 94 mostly elderly, chronic patients in the past 24 hours brought the total number of deaths to 42,069, according to the related government website koronavirus.gov.hu.

7,053 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, bringing the total number of identified infections to 1,657,615 in this country since the beginning of the epidemic.

The number of cured persons is now 1,384,170 and the number of active infected persons is 231,376. The latter number shows a decrease as on Monday, the figure was moderately higher.

5,167 patients are hospitalized with coronavirus infection, 176 of them are on ventilators. Both indicators are up slightly from a day earlier. The last time the number of hospitalised patients exceeded 5,000 was on December 22, when 5,159people were hospitalised.

The total number of vaccinated persons is 6,375,020, of whom 6,123,154 have already received their second vaccination and 3,738,393 have already received their confirmatory third vaccination.

An encouraging sign, as reported by telex.hu, is that the latest information from the National Center for Public Health shows that the increase in the level of coronavirus hereditary material in the sewage water has stopped at all measuring points, with the values currently stagnating at high (elevated) levels. A week ago, most sites showed stagnation, while at five monitoring sites, the levels were still elevated. A significant proportion of the infections, 94%, are now caused by omicron, the more rapidly spreading but, on the basis of current knowledge, not yet dangerous alvaria. This is the so-called stealth omicron variant, BA.2.
