On Saturday, 5,857 people entered Hungary crossing the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, while 4,253 of those entering at the Romanian-Hungarian border crossing declared that they had arrived from Ukraine, the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) informed the state news agency MTI on Sunday.
Of those who entered, police issued 244 people with temporary residence permits valid for 30 days. They will have to visit the office of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing responsible for their place of residence to obtain the permanent documents, they said.
160 people – including 60 children – arrived in Budapest by train, fleeing the war in Ukraine, ORFK said.
The Budapest Police Headquarters said on police.hu that they are working with the Standby Police to help refugees arriving by train from Ukraine. The Budapest Civil Guard Association is also providing support.
They are in constant contact with the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, the Hungarian State Railways, the Budapest Transport Center, the Budapest Municipal Police Directorate, the Government Office of Budapest and the staff of aid organizations, the statement said.
