The husband of Queen Elisabeth II died two months before his 100th birthday. The Hungarian President sent a letter of condolence to the Queen. Prince Philip visited Hungary in the 1980s and in the 1990s.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the Royal family has announced.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the longest-serving consort in British history, was treated in hospital earlier this year and on March 16, he returned to Windsor Castle where he died this morning.
Prince Philip visited Hungary several times. In 1984, he was member of the bronze-medalist British team at the World Four-in-hand Carriage Driving Championship in Szilvásvárad, NE Hungary. In 1993, he accompanied Elisabeth II on an official state visit to Budapest as well as to Kecskemét and Bugac in the Great Hungarian Plain.
Hungarian President János Áder sent a letter of condolence to Elisabeth II this Friday afternoon. "Your Majesty! I am very saddened to learn that His Royal Highness the Prince of Edinburgh, has passed away in the centenary of his life. Allow me to express to Your Majesty the sincere sympathy of the Hungarian people," the President wrote.
The President of the Republic added that in Prince Philip, "we have lost a great friend of Hungary, who, as a public figure and sportsman, has done a lot to deepen Hungarian-British relations. We respectfully preserve your memory."
According to the British Embassy in Budapest, "Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Hungary Paul Fox and his Team at the Budapest British Embassy learnt with deep sorrow of the passing today of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Our deepest condolences to Her Majesty and the Royal Family."
