Balázs Horváth, a journalist for Economx, received the HUF 1 million grand prize in Provident Financial Ltd.’s “Provident Press Award for the Invisible” competition. The award, presented at a formal ceremony, was granted based on the decision of a professional jury to the professional who most authentically and effectively drew public attention to the daily lives and challenges of groups living on the margins of society, who are often invisible.

Provident announced its groundbreaking competition a year ago, with the central mission of raising social awareness and supporting professional excellence. The initiative seeks to reach authors – journalists, editors, bloggers, and video content creators – who, through their articles, reports, or documentaries, give a voice to those who are excluded from social dialogue and financial services.

“At Provident, we see the kinds of life situations this competition addresses every single day. We believe that the power of the media is key to strengthening social solidarity. This award pays tribute to the journalists and content creators who do not look away, but instead use their professional expertise to shine a spotlight on even the most difficult circumstances,” CEO of Provident Financial Ltd., Viktor Boczán emphasized, in his opening remarks.

Over the past 11 months, the jury selected one outstanding work each month, and the author of each winning entry received a prize of HUF 200,000. At the closing ceremony on April 28, the overall winner of the year was chosen from among the monthly winners. At the awards ceremony, the nominees presented the background stories of their entries in short speeches, highlighting the struggles of disadvantaged communities, low-income families, and groups that have been excluded from financial education. Journalist Balázs Horváth’s winning article focused on the limitations on access to credit for those living on the minimum wage and the guaranteed minimum wage.

Márta Pálfalvi, Provident’s Director of Communications and Corporate Relations, explained during the roundtable discussion at the awards ceremony that “The results of our ‘Invisibles’ program confirm that there is a tremendous need to improve financial literacy and combat exclusion. The work of the journalists who participated in the competition, and who were recognized and awarded during the process, helps ensure that we view these people not merely as statistical data, but as real lives whose stories we now know – and whose understanding is our shared responsibility.”
