Heineken’s record attempt was a success: this past Saturday, more than 600 people played together on a nearly seven-meter-long giant foosball table set up at Erzsébet Square in downtown Budapest, and the two teams scored more than 700 goals, the brewing company says in a statement
This set a new Hungarian record; “to our knowledge, there has been no similar attempt at the international level. However, the all-day Table Soccer Marathon was not just about breaking records: participants often arrived as strangers and left as friends, proving once again that fans have more friends,” the company points out.
Not even the pouring rain could deter Budapest’s soccer and foosball fans: two weeks before the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest, a festive atmosphere reigned on Erzsébet Square. During the record attempt, which began at 10:30 a.m. and lasted until 7:00 p.m., a total of 642 players faced off on either side of the table – which was over seven meters long – and thus became the “Foosball Champions.” Those who registered quickly found common ground in teams formed spontaneously on the spot.
As a result, the most memorable moments of the day weren’t tied to breaking records, but to human connections. After their matches, members of the teams playing against each other on opposite sides of the foosball table cheered together and enjoyed the various soccer and foosball activities. Heineken’s mission – to bring people together and create authentic experiences and connections – became tangible at the Foosball Marathon.
“At Heineken, we believe that fans have more friends – and at Saturday’s Foosball Marathon, the participants brought that statement to life. For us, what matters more than the record is that many arrived as strangers and left as friends. That is exactly why we created the event,” the Marketing Director at HEINEKEN Hungária, Katalin Perényi said
In addition to the record, another highlight of the day was the arrival of the official UEFA Champions League trophy at the venue, with which participants could take photos. Heineken handed out hundreds of gifts to the players throughout the day, and at the end of the day, it also raffled off a pair of tickets to the Champions League final on May 30, so that the winners could join tens of thousands of others for an unforgettable experience at Puskás Arena.
