The renewed Zrínyi Fortress in Szigetvár, S Hungary, was inaugurated, which has seen more than HUF two billion worth of tourism improvements over the past three years.
The fortress, which is famous for the heroic stand of Miklós Zrínyi and his fellow martyrs against the Turks in 1566, was renovated as part of the National Castle and Fortress Program, which involves the development of 18 castles and 12 fortresses nationwide, with the support of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Program, with HUF 2.063 billion.
As part of the development work on one of the most significant monuments in South Transdanubia, which has been a National Monument since 2016 and this year won the Monument of the Year award, new attractions were added to the facility, which can be visited all year round. New museum functions have been installed in the previously disused kazamata building.
Péter Vass, Mayor of Szigetvár, said that four different projects had been linked to the development of the fortress over the past ten years: a visitor center had been built, the walkways, street furniture, the lake next to the castle, the kazamata terrace had been renewed, and new exhibition spaces, catering facilities and a conference room had been created. These improvements will guarantee the future of the monument.
The future development of the local spa, the construction of a four-star hotel and the extension of the M60 motorway will help to further develop tourism in the town and the region, he said.
