Two British nationals convicted earlier for supporting terrorism, Abu Izzadeen (born as Trevor Brooks), and Simon Jonathan Keeler were detained by Hungarian police at Lõkösháza border crossing point on Sunday as they were discovered on a train heading for Romania.
Described by ‘The Telegraph’ newspaper
as notorious British extremists, the pair is accused of being in breach of a
travel ban: not allowed to leave the UK without permission.
The paper says that the men
may have been trying to cross Europe and get in to Syria. It notes that in 2008,
Brooks and Keeler were jailed for four and a half years after being convicted
of inciting terrorism abroad and terrorist fundraising. The sentences were
later reduced on appeal.
Following their release, both
men were made subject to travel restrictions which meant they had to seek
permission to travel abroad.
After informed that two UK
nationals had been detained in Hungary, British police sought European arrest
warrants that came to effect this Tuesday afternoon. As a result, the two British
nationals now face deportation back to the UK.
