The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) is issueing collector coins named 'Therese Brunsvik', to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the first Hungarian kindergartens. The collector coins with a face value of HUF 20,000 and non-ferrous metal version with a face value of HUF 3,000 are available for purchase from 28 July, 2025.

Therese Brunsvik was born in 1775 into a noble aristocratic family. As one of the most educated women of her time, she was among the first in the world to highlight the importance of early childhood education. In 1828, in her family's home on Mikó Street in Buda, she opened the first "infant care and protection institute", which was the first kindergarten not only in Hungary but also in Central Europe. Thanks to her work, the first institution, which she ran with excellent pedagogical expertise, was soon followed by many other kindergartens in Pest-Buda and the countryside, and the first kindergartens in Austria and Southern Germany also opened their doors under her influence and with her assistance.

The Hungarian kindergarten founder established nearly a hundred institutions and played an active role in the development of an educational programme to help girls become conscious parents. Her public engagement and tireless work have made her one of the most influential educators.

The collector coins were designed by industrial artist Andrea Horváth.

The primary role of the collector coins is to raise awareness and promote our national values, while their use in everyday payment transactions should be avoided. The denomination is intended to preserve the value the coin holds as a collector's item.
