A record number of 317,000 travellers spent 611,000 guest nights at tourism accommodations over the four-day weekend for the October 23 national holiday, Visit Hungary said on Friday.
According to the announcement, Hungarians were particularly keen to travel, with more than 61% of guest nights coming from Hungarian guests: 184,000 set off on trips and spent 375,000 nights in domestic accommodation.
The winners of the long weekend were primarily rural service providers, who generated 64% of total accommodation revenue, or HUF 9.4 billion. Rural accommodation revenues rose by 42%.
Between October 22 and 25, the most popular rural destinations after Lake Balaton were Mátra-Bükk, the Budapest area, Debrecen and its surroundings, as well as Tokaj and Nyíregyháza, and among the towns, Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz, and Eger, according to the report. Most foreign tourists stayed in the capital, with the largest numbers coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Most visitors to the countryside came from the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Austria, and Slovakia. They mainly sought out Lake Balaton, Bük-Sárvár, and Győr-Pannonhalma, and among the towns, they preferred our spa towns of Hévíz, Bük, and Sárvár.
The majority of guests (56% ) stayed in hotels. Four-star hotels proved to be the most popular, with 59% of guests choosing this type of accommodation. Private and other types of accommodation also saw significant traffic, with 31% of guests booking accommodation here.
Thanks to the outstanding rural guest traffic, the long holiday weekend also brought record revenues: it enriched accommodation providers nationwide by HUF 14.8 billion, they wrote.
