Two Hungarian banknotes out of circulation

The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) has warned that as of this Tuesday, only the new 2,000 and 5,000 forint banknotes will be accepted in stores. On July 31, the central bank has withdrawn from circulation old notes that had been issued before 2016, and stores may choose not to accept these from now on.

As portfolio.hu reports, the central bank pointed out that the withdrawal does not mean the old banknotes will lose their value. These may be replaced with the new banknotes free of charge at every bank and postal office until July 31, 2020 and the central bank will do the same for another 20 years.

The bank also noted that 75% of the 2,000 forint notes and over 80% of the 5,000 forint denominations have been replaced by 31 July 2017.
