The National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) has terminated its investigation on suspicion of money laundering into the Ukrainian cash transport case due to the absence of a crime, NAV said on Wednesday.

According to their statement, investigation has been closed in the case in which the transport vehicle and its staff were seized by Hungarian intelligence agencies in March this year.

The investigation was suspended earlier and the public informed of the step early in July, as NAV found no evidence or indication of a crime had emerged in the case, the statement said.

It was now terminated after a response from the Austrian authorities confirming the origin of the banknotes and precious metals in the stopped shipment and clearly establishing that the purchase documentation was in order, NAV said.

Money and gold belonging to the Ukrainian state-owned financial institution Oschadbank was seized by Hungarian intelligence agencies on March 5 [during the time of the previous Hungarian government] while the shipment was transiting Hungary on its way from Austria to Ukraine.

According to a previous statement by the tax authority, the vehicles contained USD 40 million and EUR 35 million in cash as well as nine kilograms of gold. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on May 6 that Hungary had returned the money and gold to Ukraine.
