World Animal Day is celebrated around the world on October 4, the day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It is a day to raise awareness not only of the diversity and curiosity of the animal world, but also of animal protection and the conservation of endangered species, according to a statement by the Budapest Zoo.
In connection with World Animal Day, the Budapest Zoo is organizing events at two locations this week: in the Small Zoo on Margaret Island on Tuesday while the Zoo's Celebration of Animal and Plant Love will be held at the weekend.
The organizers will also hold a special program on responsible pet ownership, offering animal welfare advice and information for animal lovers.
An event was also held in downtown Budapest on the occasion of World Animal Day, attended by representatives of NGOs and two Olympians, gymnast Krisztián Berki and swimmer Dániel Gyurta, to support the cause of animal protection.
It was highlighted that the Animal Welfare Center of the Budapest University of Veterinary Medicine can help support NGOs and launch training courses. In cooperation with the University of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Miskolc has also launched a training course for animal protection lawyers.
It was said at the event that it is important for people to set an example of responsible animal keeping: there are 3-3.5 million dogs in Hungary today, and it would be good if there were as many responsible owners.
