World War II Bomb Defused in Budapest

It took about an hour for bomb disposal experts of the Hungarian army Sunday evening to defuse a one-ton air bomb found at the Kvassay Bridge in the southern part of the Hungarian capital.

On Friday, a police report was received by the bomb disposal unit that a suspected explosive object was found during earthworks in Budapest's District 9, in a closed construction area between the Kvassay Bridge and the Danube. At the scene, the bomb disposal unit commander found that a GP-2000 type, American-made World War II one-ton air bomb had been found with the nose-igniter armed.
During the bomb disposal operation, police closed the area within a radius of about one kilometer, including the affected section of the Danube. This also affected public transport and rail traffic.
After defusing the bomb, soldiers transported it to the central collection point of the Hungarian Armed Forces for later destruction.
