A hundred kilogram Soviet aerial bomb was defused in front of the Várkert Bazaar by the 1st Hungarian Army Bomb Disposal and Warfare Regiment this Monday, the Hungarian Armed Foces website honvedelem.hu reports.
Bomb disposal divers set up anchorage points on an aerial bomb found near the boat station at Várkert Bazaar, and then lifted it out with the special crane of the mine-clearing warship. The naval soldiers and the bomb disposal divers who carried out the lifting operation left the safety zone, and the bomb disposal divers started to defuse the explosive device on board the demining ship, he added.
The firefighting divers of the Budapest Fire and Rescue Directorate discovered the 100-kilogram Soviet-made aerial bomb last week during a practice dive on the river section between the Elizabeth Bridge and the Chain Bridge.
While the explosive device was being safely removed and defused, the police closed off a 400-meter radius around the area, including a section of the Lower Buda Embankment, and evacuated all properties in the area.
