With only 43% of those eligible to vote, the governing party Fidesz won the most mayoral positions and local government seats at Sunday's municipal elections on Sunday. In Budapest, István Tarlós retained his mayoral position against a fragmented opposition.

Fidesz basically - with only a few losses - repeated their 2010 results at the lower voter turnout. In Budapest, they will have a comfortable majority in the assembly as the left-wing opposition won only six of the 23 district mayoral positions.

The right-wing opposition party Jobbik finished a distant third in Budapest and have only one represenattive in the local assembly, while they won four mayoral positions in the countryside among settlements with over 10.000 inhabitants. they seem to have a stronger base in villages.

The left-wing opposition parties usually finished in second place, while winning some important strongholds such as the city of Szeged, where they joined forces.
