Tamás Sulyok was elected President of the Republic by the governing majority of Hungarian Parliament on Monday. The new head of state said he wants to build trust through mutual listening and understanding free of prejudice.
The Constitutional Court president, who was the only candidate for the post, received 134 votes in favor in a secret ballot.
Before the vote, most of the opposition parties (the Democratic Coalition, Momentum, the Hungarian Socialist Party, Jobbik and Dialogue) withdrew from the chamber, leaving 147 out of 199 MPs to cast their ballot. Of the 139 valid votes, Tamás Sulyok received 134, five voted against and there were seven invalid votes.
Following the announcement of his election by the Speaker, Tamás Sulyok took the oath of office as Head of State.
Tamás Sulyok will take office on March 5 and will be the seventh President of the Republic since the change of regime in 1990. His predecessor, Katalin Novák, resigned 16 days ago after her decision to pardon a man last year who had been convicted of concealing a string of child sexual abuses in a state-run children's home.
