Katalin Novák was elected as president of the republic by Hungarian Parliament mainly with the votes of the the two-thirds majority of the governing parties. Out of 188 valid votes, the former minister without portfolio received 137 votes and economist Péter Róna, the opposition candidate, 51.
Nominated by the ruling party Fidesz and its small satellite party KDNP, Katalin Novák said that she would respect and ensure respect for the fundamental law, work to defend the constitutional order and not to destroy it.
She added that she wants to be a good president of the country not despite being a woman, but because of this quality: as a mother and wife, she strives for peace, understanding, security and wants to be a man of peace as president of the country.
In reference to the invasion of Ukraine, she called the war started by Russia unjustifiable and inexplicable. She was of the view that Hungary was just beginning to regain the security and freedom of life it had before the coronavirus pandemic, when another devastating virus broke out: the war started 14 days ago in the immediate vicinity of Hungary.
In his speech, Péter Róna highlighted that respecting diversity – as in nature, so in politics – is important, as its disappearance leads to degradation. He added that social diversity is a hallmark of successful countries and the suppression of diversity will surely lead to disaster.
“Let's not diminish or destroy what we have already agreed on," he said. There has been a huge social consensus in Hungarian society since St Stephen that “we Hungarians want to belong to the West,” he continued. “Our world is not Russia or Turkey, where even the actions of the opposition are brutally suppressed by the authorities with murder and imprisonment, but our community is our community in the Christian and enlightened West.” He added that Hungarians’ material and personal security is guaranteed by the European Union and NATO, and asked: “why should all this be thrown aside for the friendship of a Russian dictator?”
The term of the current president, János Áder expires on May 10 but governing parties had decided to hold the parliamentary vote before the April 3 elections. His successor, Katalin Novák will be the sixth president of the republic after the regime change.
