Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a speech at a conference entitled "Economic Turnaround" in Budapest this Tuesday, evaluating the first year of his present government. He said his cabinet needs to work harder in the future.
The prime minister recognized that “we are still far from the common goal, the establishment of a strong Hungary.” He was of the view that the achievements so far have been promising but one cannot stop lean back and relax. He added that the performance the government showed in the first year will not be enough for the years to come.
He stated that Hungary is at war with indebtedness and unemployment and this war can only be won with renewal and reorganization. He added that he understood those who do not want to change the life they are used to, but, for instance, Hungary cannot afford to pay early retirement benefit or social benefit to able-bodied people when there is lots of work to do in the country.
In reference to criticism by foreign organizations to the measures of his government in its first year, the prime minister said “it is only worth listening to ourselves and we should not wait for anyone’s approval or counter-arguments.” He believes Hungarians must repulse any criticism from abroad and say it is a matter for the Hungarians.
