Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán dedicated most his traditional annual speech, delivered in front of his followers, to the issue of migrants, blaming EU leaders for not willing to act properly and stop the flow of people to the European continent.
PM Orbán claimed that Europe's future is endangered primarily "not by those who want to come here, but by those political, economic and intellectual leaders who are trying to transform Europe in opposition to the European people," blaming German Chancellor Angela Merkel for "welcoming" refugees as one of the reasons for the flow of migrants.
He also held out the prospect of further measures to strengthen defences against migrants.
Outside the building, a few thousand people protested against Viktor Orbán and his government to demand more democracy and the right to freely exercise the tool of referendum that the government is trying to block.
The opposition parties are of the view that the biggest problem to Hungarian society is not caused by migration but by the policy of the Orbán government that does not want to deal with the real problems like the the state of healthcare and public education.
