The Hungarian governing parties - that is, Fidesz and the small KDNP - re-elected János Áder, a former high-ranking official at Fidesz, as Hungarian President. None of the opposition members of parliament endorsed János Áder's candidacy.

János Áder received 131 votes while former data commissioner László Majtényi, a candidate supported by the leftist opposition, had 39 votes. Áder was elected in a second round with a simple majority of votes, after the first round had been rendered inconclusive by neither candidate receiving two-thirds of all deputies in the 199-strong national assembly.

Áder was first elected president on May 2, 2012. Earlier, he also served as house speaker and as MEP of the ruling Fidesz party.
