The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has officially taken over the presidency of the European Council from the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. The handover took place in Brussels on Monday, where Orbán and De Croo held talks to mark the transition. This marks the beginning of Hungary's six-month tenure in the role.
During his visit to Brussels, Prime Minister Orbán, accompanied by the President of the Republic, Tamás Sulyok, also inaugurated the newly renovated Hungarian House. This building will serve as the primary venue for events and programs related to Hungary's presidency.
Hungary last held the presidency of the European Council 13 years ago, from January 1, 2011. Similar to this year, the presidency was then handed over by Belgium, and after Hungary, it was taken over by Poland, then led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Hungary followed Belgium to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
