On Tuesday morning, outgoing Head of State János Áder received the new President of the Republic at the entrance to the Sándor Palace, the state news agency MTI reports.
János Áder and Katalin Novák entered the presidential residence Sándor Palace together, then went to the presidential office and stepped out onto the terrace of the Palace.
Katalin Novák was elected President of the Republic by the National Assembly on March 10, and her inauguration ceremony will take place on Saturday, starting with an ecumenical service.
Katalin Novák is the sixth President of the Republic since the change of the social and political system.
According to the Basic Law (which replaced the Constitution of Hungary in 2011 with the votes of the parliamentary majority of the ruling Fidesz party), the President expresses the unity of the nation, oversees the democratic functioning of the state and is the commander-in-chief of the Hungarian Defense Forces. The head of state is elected by Parliament for a five-year term and may be re-elected for a maximum of one term.
